Rand and the Aiel, together with Mat, Egwene, Moiraine and Lan go directly to the Waste using a Portal Stone, which Rand requires an angreal to use. They arrive next to a city - Rhuidean.

The best thing about reading this series is the constant reminder of how long it is. As I readthis, I frequently looked up at my Wheel of Time shelf, at the nine books I have yet to read in the series, which serve as a reminder that I’ve barely scratched the surface of this totally epic fantasy world. I have so much left to see. Rand al'Thor has just claimed the crystal sword Callandor to prove himself the Dragon Reborn. He is approached by Lanfear who tells him of the Forsaken's plans. The fortress known as the Stone of Tear is stormed by Trollocs and Fades, sent by another Forsaken ( Sammael), while a third, Semirhage, sends her followers into the Stone to oppose Sammael's forces. In defense, Rand uses Callandor to create a lightning storm killing all the Trollocs and Fades. Thom had at least one sibling, a brother. Whatever other family he had were already dead by 985 NE. His last remaining relative, his brother's only son, was from eastern Andor, near Aringill, so it is possible this is where Thom was born too. [7] [6]At one point, Mat refers to having "four sisters" willing to tattle on him when he was up to any mischief. [5] This can be regarded as an error, however, as he also refers only two sisters, Eldrin and Bodewhin, in the same context in the next book. Furthermore, no other sisters are ever mentioned in the series, even when other members of his family are kidnapped by Whitecloaks and the book Glossary and The Wheel of Time Companion seem consistent in this fact in the relevant entries. [6] Relationships

Thom later ran into Rand in Cairhien when the young man was making his way to Falme. [10] Soon afterward, Thom's apprentice and lover Dena was murdered by men in the employ of King Galldrian Riatin. [11] In a suspicious turn of events, the king was murdered hours later. (Thom may or may not have been the killer, as even his own statements on the subject were ambiguous). It was strongly hinted that he was the killer when Elayne offered him a pardon for any crimes he may have committed in Cairhien, to which Thom replied, "How did she know...?"I have been lukewarm at best about most of the series so far, as Jordan's penchant for exhaustive repetition is nothing short of maddening, but in this book he manages to drop it (along with the omnipresent adolescent angst that manages to overshadow every significant event by burying it under a mountain of triviality) long enough to achieve a few moments with some genuine emotional resonance. To avoid posting any spoilers, I will refrain from specifics, but the most poignant are the moments of history that Rand views, and they succeed where so many other efforts by Jordan fail because he--probably unintentionally--drops his usual writing devices and gets out of the way to simply narrate the events for us. The contrast between this part and most of the rest of the series is really amazing, and shows just how strongly we can feel the emotions of the moment without having to have it spelled out repeatedly for us both before and afterward. It's unfortunate that Jordan seems to trust the intelligence of his readers so little. Thom tagged along with Moiraine, when she entered the discussion between Rand and all the other monarchs of the land at the Field of Merrilor. There Moiraine managed to quell all arguments against Rand, leading to all the rulers signing the Dragon's Peace. Thom was with Rand when he stood outside Shayol Ghul testing whether the Dull dagger worked. Thom decided to guard the entrance to the Bore rather than enter with Rand, Moiraine, and Nynaeve. He kissed Moiraine goodbye and watched them as they enter the Pit of Doom. There were many channelers wearing Mask of Mirrors posing as, among others, Cadsuane Melaidhrin. He killed at least five intruders, the last one being Jeaine Caide, and dumped their bodies in a hollow not far from his position. He used his time guarding the passage writing a ballad telling Rand's tale and the Last Battle. He compared several words to each other to determine which ones he would use. Accompanied by Moiraine Damodred, Rand arrives at the Aiel Waste and is granted permission by the Wise Ones to enter the sacred city of Rhuidean. After passing through a doorframe ter'angreal, Moiraine gains foresight while the Aiel await Rand's return, either with both arms marked by dragon symbols, validating his identity as He Who Comes With the Dawn, the Chief of Chiefs of all the Aiel—or to never emerge at all. He accompanied Tuon Athaem Kore Paendrag and Mat to a hell in the town of Maderin. While in The White Ring, he brought the news that the entire Seanchan army was after Tuon, claiming she was an imposter. As they were all leaving the hell, they were spotted by Darkfriends who were intent on killing Mat. Thom protected Tuon while Mat engaged another group behind them. Here Thom witnessed Selucia's fighting ability. At the end of the fight, Thom professed to not remember seeing Selucia fight at all. And my personal favourite: “He sounded like a bumblebee the size of a cat instead of a mastiff.” Incredible stuff.

Egwene enters the World of Dreams without the ter'angreal for the first time. While there, she meets Amys, who says that if Egwene wants to learn, she must come to the Waste. She also goes to Tanchico, which Amys says contains an evil worse than men can make, whatever that means. I would have to recall a moment some years ago with my previous band where I read a review stating this about me: “I think my biggest complaint is really the vocalist, who I’m convinced is merely a friend of the band who got a spot in the line-up simply because he was a nice guy with a high voice who let the bassist crash on his couch a few times. This dude couldn’t sing his way out of a grade school talent show, and it taints an already lame album even further.” This guy had his blog called something like Lair of the Bastard and his words about my vocals almost made me quit singing for a while but I managed to shake it off and kept working on improving my voice. Chapter 47 has four points of view, two of which are from Min Farshaw's POV. Her first is 8% of the chapter and her second is 65% of the chapter. The Shadow Rising takes place not very long after the events of the 3rd book in the series, the Dragon Reborn, where the group finds themselves at the stone trying to figure out what must be done next. Perrin approaches Loial about taking him home via the Ways, but finds Faile there before him. Faile has made Loial promise to take her through the Ways before anyone else. Lan confronts Nynaeve about her plans to travel to Tanchico, then offers to leave Moiraine and come with her. Nynaeve sends him away.

Siuan and Leane are both "stilled" (their ability to channel the One Power prevented) and Elaida becomes the next Amyrlin.
