Carmen: I’m originally from Canada 🇨🇦 and have had an entrepreneurial spirit for as long as I can remember. I started my first business aged just six years old, making and selling Christmas wax ornaments to my friends and family – I think they knew then just how tenacious I can be! 🎄 David Waterhouse, the founder, has had an extraordinary journey to get to this point. He was a sailor on tall ships from a young age, was a lone farmer on Bodmin moor, completed a stint as a racing driver, was a music festival organiser and he now has a hotel in the Swiss alps, where the bier was invented. and Co. says the certification and rebrand will underpin its wider business growth plan, which focuses on partnerships with other ethical and sustainable drinks producers alongside the development of its core spirits range.

As with all its ciders, Thatchers Blood Orange Cider is gluten free, and suitable for vegetarians and vegans. It uses natural blood orange flavour and is free from any artificial sweeteners. Thatchers Blood Orange is Thatchers’ second citrus flavoured cider. In 2020, its Cloudy Lemon Cider was launched and has proven to be a big hit with drinkers. Laila: I gave birth to my son two months before the pandemic, so in a way, it has been lovely to have plenty of time with my little one. 👶 On the other hand, this pandemic has had a significant impact on the event industry. One of the main challenges was dealing with the constant uncertainty. 😔 Looking to the future, where do you see yourself and the business going?For 58 Gin, supporting the local community goes hand-in-hand with sustainability efforts. A recent partnership successfully combined both efforts, as Carman explains: “We linked up with Humble Crumble Londonin Spitalfields by donating gin-soaked (macerated) sloe berries for use in its sloe berry, strawberry and mint crumble. Essentially, we’re giving the berries another lease of life while supporting another business, which all aligns to our ethos: to do everything from the heart and to be a truly artisan, neighbourhood distiller.” Temi decided to celebrate by trying a real gin and tonic, and as she describes it, it was love at first taste!

I think a huge part of us being able to ride the wave of the pandemic has been down to us being a small, adaptable business. However, we’re also an incredibly passionate team and as such we instantly came together brilliantly to keep things going every day! 🤗 At the core of 58 Gin's philosophy is sustainability and community engagement. They forage sloes for their English Berry Gin, repurpose apples that would otherwise go to waste for their Apple and Hibiscus Gin, and donate their waste botanicals to the local church garden. During the COVID-19 pandemic, they switched gears to produce hand sanitiser for NHS, key workers, care homes, and hospices, exemplifying their dedication to local and responsible actions. We know what we can do now,” Carmen says of her 58 Gin’s crazy year. “We’re just on the cusp of something pretty amazing.”As Carmen explains, “We do literally everything ourselves. We joke that we don’t do anything the easy way. It’s not fast, it’s not easy, but it’s true to the traditional roots.”
