Two Bridges Race 2011
The Kelso Two Bridges Race, organised by the Kelso Crawlers, was held on Sunday 11 September 2011 at 1.00pm. There were two races - the Senior and Junior - which both started from Shedden Park.
The prize winners from the 2011 Two Briges Race
It was doubtful whether this race would get started at all given all the severe weather warnings that had been issued by the met office for the weekend of the 11the September. However, a hardy 43 runners from around the East and Border countryside including Lothian and Mussleburgh, stuck with it and showed a good turnout. This local race now competes with the Hawick Half and other local races and so the numbers were expected to drop slightly. With 15 junior runners and 30 adults running round a very blustery Kelso’s 2 bridges preparations began early with the signs going up to direct the runners and warn them to stay on the pavements ( not an easy task when the wind kept blowing away the signs!)
Once again Darrell Hastie (16.44) took the overall male title and the fantastic wooden trophy has now gone back to it’s home again where it has happily sat for several years now! Second was Colin Welsh (16.57 with Wayne McIntosh (18.09) in third.
The ladies saw a new name going onto the trophy with Scout Adkin from the Moorfoot school taking the title in a time of 19.03. Kirstie Thomson (Gala Harriers, 20.43) was second with local runner Adrienne Little (22.53) in third.
The Adult team to win was Teviotdale Harriers (Colin Welsh, Wayne McIntosh, Derek Scott, Bryan Graham) with the Overall veteran male and female being Bob Marshall (Gala H.19.14) and Mary Pattison (Mussleburgh 23.42) Second in the men’s race here was Steve Pattison and 3rd Ian Maxwell. In the ladies we had only two entries with Carol Mabon (Lothian RC) taking second.
A special award was presented to Ailsa McVey on her outstanding effort running this as her first ever race! She showed great courage and determination!
Home grown talent was very much in evidence with the Junior section of the race. They ran 2k, with Josh Abbott taking the Primary Boy title in a time of 14.27 2nd Ross Gillie and 3rd Andrew Thomson.
First Primary Girl was Sarah Davenport (19.20) with Jemima Wharton in second. The junior team was won by Kelso AC members Toby and Oscar Rodwell helped team mates Andrew, Ross and Josh above.
With no entries in the Under 16 girls of S1/2 Boys race this meant that there were only 2 secondary categories raced for the Under 16 boy winner Gordon Armstrong (13.55, this with a stop to see how his friend was!) followed by Euan Pettigrew and then John Archibald. All Kelso lads.
In the S1/2 girls race Linsey Young managed to move up from her primary winners category successfully by taking the win 15.53 (PB) with fellow badminton player Ciara Donlevy from Lauder coming in second and Lauren Falkener in third. Linsey helped the 3 boys above in the Kelso High school team to take the team event with lets just say an interesting team name!!
Thanks went to Blair’s the Jewellers of Kelso for providing the medals (again!) as well as Kelso Crawlers the Cricket Club, Kelso police and all the local Marshals from families and friends which also included the expert help from the Border Search and Rescue unit (which we managed to raise £16 for in a collection at the end of the race).
Aptek Kelso Crawlers 10k - Sunday 17th July 2011
Despite twenty four hours of heavy rain prior to the start of the race, a record number of runners lined up at the start line on the Cobby in Kelso for the third Aptek Kelso Crawlers 10k race. 176 runners completed the course which takes in the beautiful home of the Duke of Roxburghe, Floors Castle. The multi terrain route starts next to the River Tweed and winds its way around the walls of the castle grounds before entering the estate from the East. Runners then run a loop around the castle before the long fast downhill stretch towards the finish line back next to the River Tweed again. The rain held off for most of the race, however, a heavy shower did catch a few runners before they returned to Kelso Rugby Club where a welcome cup of tea or coffee with some delicious traybakes were on offer supplied by the Hazel Lodge tea room.
Runners from all over Scotland travelled to Kelso as well as a few from England and a couple from Switzerland who were holidaying in Scotland.
Results are now available.

Two Bridges Race 2010 - Race report
Despite a disappointing entry in, terms of numbers, for this, the 10th Anniversary of the SPORTKelso 2 Bridges race, the runners and their supporters enjoyed a lovely afternoon in sunny Kelso! Organised by the Kelso Crawlers Running club, on behalf of the SPORTKelso organisation, the 2 Bridges race went exceptionally well due to the fantastic support of the Kelso community. Held at Shedden Park, using the Kelso Cricket Club facilities; supported by Kelso Rugby club; Blairs Jewellers; Marshals provided by the Kelso Tennis, local athletes, football and Badminton clubs; the bibs provided by the Broomlands Primary school, the Borders Search and Rescue and the local police service providing the safety cover and the Active Schools co-ordinator Deborah Martin for the Primary schools, this truly was a ‘coming together’ of many of the sports clubs and groups within the town and local community. ‘A really, friendly, relaxed, warm atmosphere’. A Quoits competition at the side of the Cricket club, a barbecue and a family afternoon of cricket where the parents played the children, after the presentations - things could not have been any better! Unfortunately there were no entries for the S1/2 or U16 girls races nor for the female veteran’s race this year - so come on girls let see you there next year!

Kelso Crawlers 10k 2010
The Kelso Crawlers 10k was held on Sunday 18th July 2010 at 11.00 am.
The Kelso Crawlers running club had this event well under control this year with the cows safely herded up into a corner as runners from as far away as Hong Kong and Germany took off through the fantastic grounds of Floors Castle for the 3rd annual Civic week 10k run. This is now firmly established in the running world as one of the ‘friendliest ’ and ‘most beautiful’ runs with over half the entrants staying to enjoy the company of fellow runners in the rugby club while enjoying refreshments provided by sponsor Ian Burton of the Hazel Lodge café in Kelso. The time of the run was moved to later this year to allow some of the civic week cycle participants to enter making a total entry of 167 runners! Both race and team winners came from Corstorphine AAC - Gillian Carr and Keith Hood, Grant Wilkie (Vets). Corstorphine AAC (team). Local winners were Alan Goodson and Denise Douglas with Joanna Ayling Dress Agency shop runners lifting the home team title for the second year running (excuse the pun). This race is a very special one as Portabello RC representatives discovered this year and they are thinking of bringing a bus full of runners next year and even adding it to their championships list (I hope they do).
The Kelso Crawlers would like to thank Plexus who were the main sponsor of this year's event, as well as Norman Anderson and Jim of Kelso Rugby Club for supplying the water and making everything so readily available to us. To the Kelso Civic week committee for advertising, Hogarths for the very yummy oatcake biscuits, the Border Search and Rescue team for their superb professionalism throughout (and fun radio communications), Forbes Plastics and Cooks Taxi’s for donating the cups for the winners! Hazel Lodge Café for catering and sponsorship, Floors Castle for allowing us to once again use their magnificent grounds, all the family and friends who were roped into helping with the marshalling especially the youngsters on the end water and food station and the Kelso High School Senior Hockey squad who worked tirelessly from 9am in the morning plus all the spectators who came down to the ‘Cobby’ in Kelso to see the runners off and to applaud them over the finish line!
As well as the fantastic winning times from Gillian and Keith highlights this year were when the ducks had to be marshalled off the finish line several times by finish line judge Brian Young, when Caroline McDermott leader of RunDuns Jogscotland group went back after finishing her race to encourage and escort one of her runners over the finish line again! When Mandy Patterson of RunDuns knocked over 5 minutes off her PB, when Ian Rielly of Melrose received the ‘spot time’ prize and had no idea why he was winning an award (it’s the taking part that counts too you know), when Alastair Learmont from Edinburgh received a special merit award for running his 1st ever race, when the special award was given to our visitor from Germany and finally when a very brave little girl got stuck in the toilets – we got her out safely so she could give her mum a lovely big cuddle! The Kelso Crawlers committee should give themselves a huge pat on the back for flawlessly ‘running’ this lovely community event – fantastic!
